VRW 4-Way

Calling all VRW / VFS 4-Way fliers! If that’s you listen up.  I realize that it’s not Photography based, however I’m looking for someone to take over the website: http://www.vrw4way.com That is horribly out of date. It also is www.vfs4way.com too for those who were ready to yell out.  Whoever wants it can bring it up to date and I can work with you during the transition. Send me a note and let me know!

If you or your team are striving to be the next National Champs, it might not be a bad website to be in charge of!  Just saying!

Summer Schedule….

For the past decade, I think it’s fair to say that I’ve had the majority of my summers planned out by late winter.  Not every minute of every day mind you, but at least close to half of the weekends from April to October.  Skydiving is an interesting, exhilarating, time taking, life consuming beast of a ‘hobby’.  Who’s going to that boogie, well I have to go to that one, it was great last year!  The reasons go on and on, much like the list of events that start to pile up, with a stack of plane tickets that match those dates and locations with my name on them.  What’s a boy to do?  I have a camera, people seem to like the pictures that I take, I love doing it, so why not go and play for a spell?

The past year as well as this one, I’ve made a point to have a life.  I acknowledge that I can’t go to every single event, all the time.  This being my 16th year in the sport I’m realizing that I don’t want to go to every single event, every weekend!  I want to have a life and enjoy the world around me, the mountains, my friends and yes, a fun skydiving event here and there is a nice bonus.  So why can’t I pick and choose?  Maybe I’m just spoiled?

With all of that said, if you’re wondering where I’ll be this summer and when you can jump in front of my lens, literally and figuratively, I will post them now.  Granted things do change, events get added and removed, so feel free to double check if you’d like to meet up and get some shots!  If you see me there please don’t hesitate to come up and grab me and say hey, can you come and film our jump?  If I’m not already on a load, let’s go!

Looking forward to seeing you again this summer and if I haven’t met you yet, then maybe it’s just a matter of time.

March Madness Centerfold

I do realize that I have pictures printed in skydiving magazines all around the world, but I think it’s worthy to note each time I’m lucky enough to get a cover shot or a centerfold.  Well, my trip down to Sebastian two months ago to cover their March Madness Freefly Sequentials seems to have paid off in the form a nice Centerfold Exit Shot in the May issue of Parachutist!  The original shot in my gallery can be seen here.  Thanks guys for a great time and chance to capture your event for the world to see!  Looking forward to next year!

Shootin’ and Drinkin’ with Living Social

Urban Escapes is now Living Social Adventures!

My friend Maia started a company not long ago based in NYC called Urban Escapes.  The idea was to create some fun filled day trips for young professionals and allow them to experience a little get away either in or just outside of the city, “Get out of the bubble”.  Well, her idea was a good one and before ya know it she was opening branch offices in other cities and then next thing she knew Urban Escapes was being purchased by Living Social!  Go Maia!

I was lucky enough to come on one of their first outings in Denver!  It was their very well received Shootin’ and Drinkin’ trip.  The idea is to get a group of around 15 people and take them to the gun range to fire all sorts of hand guns to be followed by some Whiskey tasting at a Whiskey Bar!  It’s very important to note that these things MUST take place in that order 😉  It’s Shootin’ and Drinkin’ not Drinkin’ and Shootin’!

Once all of the shooting was done, we got back on the bus and headed back to the Whiskey Bar.  Overall I can say that I saw smiles on just about everyone’s face!  Something about holding a Glock or an M1911 Caliber .45 that makes the day just that much better.

That was it for this trip, but keep an eye out for Living Social Adventures in your neck of the woods.  As they get more established they’ll have more and more trips showing up.  Everything from hiking to camping to rafting to shooting guns and drinking whiskey!  Thanks for letting me tag along!

Frittfall in Norway – New Tearsheet

Over the years I’ve put together some Tear Sheets of my work.  From time to time I update and add to them as I get new pictures published around the globe.  The latest edition to my portfolio of work is a magazine based in Norway called FrittFall.  They published 2 separate, 2 page spreads as well as a picture in their annual calendar that goes to all of their members.

To see all of my Tear Sheets please take a peak at my Tear Sheet Gallery.

The beginning….March Madness Video

When I was down in Sebastian for March Madness a few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to meet budding skydiver Jonathan Pears.  Many know him from his work creating Wake Boarding videos and his work with the Red Bull Air Races.  Well, some how Jonathan found out about the world of skydiving and while he is putting tons of effort into building up his jump numbers, he’s also taking a look at our sport through the eyes of a film maker.

Using some of the video I and others shot from the weekend, Jonathan put together this piece to wrap up the event.  We’ve been in contact since and I’m looking forward to seeing what projects we can work on in the future.

New Social Networking tools in gallery

About a year ago I decided to search for a new photo gallery to display my work when I take pictures at events.  I wanted an easy way for people to navigate through all of the shots.  What I found was a service by a company called DPhoto.  While it didn’t meet all of my needs, (like being able to order prints directly from within the gallery) I found it to be far superior in terms of the flow and navigation.  It’s EASY to use and get around in.  And it’s sexy.  There is nothing wrong with sexy.

Just a few days ago they released some updates that I’ve already implemented on my site in terms of Social Networking.  You can now post individual pictures or entire albums onto your Facebook page with a status update.  When you put your mouse over the image, a little “f” and Mail icon appear:

On the album title at the top, simply click the drop down and you get a similar list to post the entire album.

When you select to upload to Facebook it opens a new window where you can choose to make a status update or just Send a Message to a Friend instead.

Selecting to send an e-mail generates a modal window where you can fill out the appropriate information and send away!

All in all the new updates look great!  I’m still holding out for 3 things that my events gallery is lacking.  1 – Being able to order and pay with Paypal or Google Checkout. 2 – Music while browsing. 3 – Folders, being able to organize albums based on year, location, etc….

If you’d like to give it a shot take a peak at my events gallery at http://events.brianbuckland.com and share some pictures out there and as always, please let me know what you think!

More dogs in the studio….

I try not to let things slip through the cracks, but every now and then it happens to the best of us.  Life gets busy and if no one reminds you, it just disappears until you find it again and say to yourself…..wooops!  With that said, here is a shoot that I did with Jake, Olive, Stephen and Meghan at the end of last year only to be posting now.  Sorry for the HUGE delay guys, but I hope you enjoy the shots!

Part of the reason I failed to edit and post this shoot was because I got wrapped up in having to relocate on short notice.  I’m now over in Stapleton and my new home studio is just about ready.  So if you or anyone you know in the greater Denver area are in need of some shots, I will have studio session pricing out shortly.  Please feel free to contact me in the mean time.

Sebastian’s March Madness Freefly Sequentials

For the Full Gallery Click Here

This past weekend was Sebastian’s Annual March Madness week.  Luis Prinetto and Scott (Plamer) Palmer held their Freefly Sequentials, focusing on Head Up sequentials and big ways. Friday was a warm up day with headdown flying followed by a challenging Saturday of Head Up flying.

The Big Ways lead to multiple twin otter formation loads where we built mixed head up and head down formations (Thanks Dave).  I have to say, there is nothing like taking pictures over the Sebastian Beach Inlet, especially during sunset.  The quality of fliers has been constantly improving over the year with the dawn of tunnel flying.  This event wouldn’t have been possible just a few years ago.

Right in the midst of all of the fun was a Casino Night held Saturday evening where the grand prize was a free UPT Vector Micron for the person who won the most gambling!  Congrats Manuel!

If you’d like to check out the full gallery, please visit my events page to see all of the fun up close and personal!  See you at the next one!!!

My new camera stand…..

Ok, so maybe it’s more than a camera stand. It’s the brand new helmet made by SkySystems USA and it’s called the Vapor Narrow. I just got it this past week and will be heading to Sebastian this weekend to take it on it’s first flight.  The new molds that they are using are now 100% Carbon fiber so its lighter than my previous Vapor.   Can’t wait to feel the difference!

This is also my first post using a mobile app on my Android phone.  Let’s see how it does…..seems to be a bit quirky…might have to work out some kinks…..
